These black ash burl calls are made from aged burls, some of which are spalted. Each one is going to be different in the grain structure and inherent flaws, which are part of burl woods. In the picture of one example you will see a couple of holes. These actually ADD value to items made of burls. I'm sure you've seen some of the decorative bowls and platters made from burls. You might also see worm holes and spalted areas that enhance the value even more. Spalted wood is a white area of decomposing wood that has been stabilized. It definitely adds character.
